The biggest thing about the report though is that the definition of genocide simply doesn't factor in how an insurgent group can use it's own population for propaganda. What level of culpability does Hamas have? Because this report's conclusions are *none whatsoever*.

I've posted the link to this article before in this subreddit, but it explains how the Jews in the Levant have been accused of genocide since right after the word was invented to describe the overarching crime of the holocaust, before WWII was even over. Even in the 1940s, apparently, the Arab powers were already trying to twist the wording of that definition to suggest that the Jews in the Levant were genocidal. Why does every commission or report of genocide repeat and rely on the same faulty points.

I truly despise Islam and hence am not a fan of muslims (aka people who choose to follow this ideology. Kids not included). So I automatically sided with Israel. But I never paid much attention to the conflict since it started (as it was pretty black and white for me). I read about the UN declaring it a genocide this morning so I did some research and I was quite surprised when I saw the data.

According to Google/ChatGPT/Wikipedia, Palestine has/had a population of 5,500.000 people

According to Wikipedia the number of Palestinian casualties so far is: 65,643 Palestinians (as of September 1th 2025, this also includes combattants)

So that is 1.19% of the population.

I'm obviously not a military expert but that sounds like the most badly executed genocide of all time. The conflict has been going on for almost 2 years. Israel has had complete air dominance pretty much since the beginning. Calling this a genocide seems like a joke.

For comparison: The number of Gerrman civilians killed during WW2 is estimated to be somewhere between 1.5m and 3m. So let's take the lowest(!) estimate (and 70m Germans). That would be 2.14% (only counting cilvians, not including combattants, unlike the Palestinian numbers)

So by that definition the allied forces commited a genocide against Germany. Do people that think that the Israel/Palestine conflict is a genocide also think that the allied forces committed a genocide against Germans?

As I said I'm obviously not a military expert, but if I was the head of the Israelian army for a week and my goal was to genocide as many of those "pesky Palestinians that I would hypothetically hate so much that I wanted to genocide them", I could probably kill 65,643 within just a few days. Easily.

War is super horrible. People dying is super horribe. Innocent children dying is super horrible. War crimes are super horrible. No doubt about any of that. But if I look at the numbers...calling this a genocide seems super dishonest or simply wrong. Unless you call what the allied forces did to Germany a genocide also. But then I would probably still disagree that killing "only" (note the "") 2% of a population is a genocide.

I think there are a number of issues with the report.

Including:
- Critique of famine allegations almost solely based on comparison of pre-war vs current aid truck delivery; minimizes impact of destruction of agricultural production on access to high-nutrient foods, completely ignores how repeatedly relocating people and bombing civilian infrastructure destroys food that came in (the calories of food in houses and stores and warehouses Israel bombed are not available for consumption); completely ignores increased caloric needs due to war vs non-war conditions (widespread digestive illness; widespread injuries; walking miles roundtrip to get aid or water vs Walking to your kitchen).

-Privileges IDF/government statements and isolated “friendly” testimonies over UN, NGOs, Palestinians.

I read Chapter 1 in some detail, I haven't read on.

Chapter 1 is extremely shoddy.

The allegations of famine and intentional starvation centre on the period when Israel cut off all food for 80 days, starting March 3. It is impossible to credibly engage with these allegations without addressing the question of what happened while Israel was cutting off all supplies.

Yet of the 70 pages (in a 300 page report) purportedly devoted to scrutinising the famine claim, only **three** discuss this period, almost as an afterthought: '1M. Claims of Starvation after the End of the Second Ceasefire in 
March 2025'.

They only say that they think it was the wrong policy, without analysing its consequences, except for one sentence:

&gt; To conclude, there is evidence of food shortages between late April and May 19, 2025, at least among impoverished and disconnected families. While we strongly sympathize with their suffering, the claims made during that period by the UN were characterized by the same problematic practices outlined earlier [...]

There is no analysis of the crucial period!

This undermines the whole chapter, and frankly the whole report.

Okay, I've had the chance to review the first section (1A) it makes false claims as well as uncritically accepting the Israeli position as true without even mentioning contrary evidence existing, let alone trying to come to a conclusion of which is true.

I was expecting some bias as this comes from an Israeli institution that is known for its support of the state, but I think based on the sample I've had a chance to fully review this is a poorly put together white-washing.

I realise I'm not backing up my claims at the moment but I'm phone-posting, so in the next day or two I'll probably make a separate post covering what I've looked into once I've had the time to write it up.

So to sunnerize chapter 1 and what it means: A lot of the “Israel is starving Gaza” narrative comes from how the truck numbers were framed:


The 500 trucks/day needed to not starve Gaza figure is misleading. It was counted per working day, not calendar day. If you spread it over the whole year, the average is closer to 200–300 trucks/day. It also included all goods (cement, steel, fuel, etc.), not just food. 


In reality, about 150-180 food trucks/day entered Gaza pre-war (or around 70 if you only count humanitarian food).


By using 500 as the “minimum needed,” aid agencies and media created a circular logic: anything below 500 was called “starvation,” even if calorie needs were met with fewer, more food-focused trucks.


That’s also why many IPC famine projections didn’t match reality, they were based on shaky assumptions (500 trucks baseline, 44% “local production” misread as calories, etc.).


This doesn’t mean there’s no hunger in Gaza of course. Distribution breakdowns, looting, blockages (both from Israel and now most resent from UN themself). But the claim of a deliberate starvation policy rests heavily on data that is at best misleading.

I would really appreciate it if some people from both sides could shed some light on some oddities I found in the first chapter. Remember everyone that it's important we provide a safe space for people to speak honestly otherwise communicating is reactive and defensive:

To begin, I think the really big issue for people about this war is collective punishment. The fact that not all of any side agreed to take part in it but find themselves in terrible situations regardless. When a person is punished, (like not eating, or being attacked on Oct 7th) for something they themselves haven't done, the world tends to condemn it because it lacks justice/fairness.

The article addresses the justification for the blockades, in that it was to prevent Hamas from looting/profiteering.

The issue I see with the blockades is: If Hamas is stealing food, why would they stop looting because aid was limited?  If Hamas is first in line for aid, because they simply steal it, then they aren't really affected by the prevention of aid? Which means the blockade exists to punish Hamas, but it's the civilians who are affected by it? It seems to undermine the point of the blockade while simultaneously being a textbook example of collective punishment.

So I guess my question would be, why the blockade in the first place (in the context of food)? It punishes everyone (which is just wrong) but it also punishes Hamas the least?

And this does seem to me to have been in part a direct result of some of Israel's choices here. 

Further, this report covers the period through June 1, but COGAT's data, following the method used here, continued to show that food entering Gaza continued to be inadequate through both June and July, with only August finally showing a significant surge to above the monthly average for 2024.

I read the report there, it’s a very interesting read. Unfortunately, like many other well constructed arguments in this sub that aren’t explicitly pro Israel, my response will most likely be immediately downvoted, and I’ll just be called antisemetic, but here we go:

To start, the issue of institutional and authorial bias is enormous. Every single author is Israeli, and the report is published by the Begin-Sadat Center for Strategic Studies, which is explicitly tied to Israeli strategic and policy interests. This is not a neutral research institute; it’s a think tank that has historically defended Israeli military and political policies. Of course it is going to be heavily biased, it would be surprising if it wasn’t. You can’t treat a publication produced entirely within the same national and institutional context that has a vested interest in defending Israel as if it were an independent, neutral analysis.

Beyond that, the methodological concerns are insane! The report itself relies heavily on speculation, particularly regarding casualty figures and the ratios of civilians to combatants. For example, in Chapter 5, the authors openly admit that they are constructing “speculative scenarios” about how reported Gaza Health Ministry data might have been manipulated. That is not empirical verification, it’s fucking guesswork dressed up as analysis. At the same time, the report spends many pages criticizing the methodologies of the UN, well regarded and famously neutral NGOs, journalists, and human rights organizations, arguing that their casualty figures are unreliable due to political manipulation, restricted access, or poor verification. But the report does not subject its own assumptions and speculative calculations to the same level of scrutiny. Essentially, it sets a standard for everyone else that it does not meet itself, which is a classic double standard.

The framing throughout the report is also heavily slanted. Chapters that discuss urban warfare, Hamas’s use of human shields, and operational challenges frame Israel’s strikes almost exclusively in a way that minimizes or justifies civilian casualties. I skimmed the beginning of the article just to get a feel for it, then I found this quote from the article:

So yeah, this study is very suspicious and the motivations of the primary authors conflicts with its objectivity. On another note, posting a 300 page paper and expecting redditors to respond to it is a bit unfair. Zionists here are already posting about the lack of a response after only an hour or two. We're random internet people, not expert researchers. Cut us some slack.

First off, it is applying the strictest possible interpretation of the Genocide Convention, arguing that without “smoking gun” proof of intent, the charge fails. International courts and tribunals often rely on patterns of conduct, not only explicit admissions so their adherence to such strict limitations isn't realistic.

It also presents Israel’s military actions as isolated incidents in a difficult war environment, there is no engagement with the total humanitarian collapse in Gaza, the near-total destruction of infrastructure, famine, displacement of the majority of the population and doing so ignores the larger picture of collective destruction.

UN also couldn't agree on if Russia had committed war crimes in Ukraine, and China was in charge of the human rights commission for a little bit. The issue is its definitely not impartial. Any country, even one with a history of doing pretty shit things, has a voice, and the UN gives the opportunity for that voice to be disseminated

What is this backwards logic? If Ukraine had a list with 100,000 dead/probably dead russian soldiers and Russia claimed 500,000 Russians were killed, would that mean Ukraine has killed 400,000 russian civilians?

I've also looked this up. Apparently this 8,900 militants list is a database with the militant names with their affiliation (Islamic Jihad or Hamas) and their status (dead or probably dead).  
The methodology to label every person not on the databank as civilian is heavily flawed imo. If there were no databank it would mean every single person killed so far was a civilian.

But apparently it was said on Oct. 10 2023, so basically at the very start of this current war.

This is the opinion of a self-appointed  commission of 3 people who does NOT speak for the UN and whose entire purpose is to politically persecute Israel ans have a history of making ridiculous statements against it.  They are nobodies who have 0 legal authority. 

Gennocide is a legal term. And not just any term, but the single worst crime against humanity possible, and it has an incredibly high standard of proof that has to be proven without a reasonable doubt.

This accusation can be argued and determined in the international court only.

Kothari, for onstance, managed to get himself denounced for antisemitism by Britain, France, Germany, Canada, Italy, the United States, the European Union, Netherlands, Australia, Austria, the Czech Republic, Israel, Hungary, Brazil, Belgium, Switzerland, Sweden, Norway and Denmark a couple of years ago.

Genocide is all too commonly tossed around. This is, at best a pre-genocide situation in the same manner that Canada committed a genocide against its First Nations peoples.  Cultural and land.  If Israel keeps the land this triggers such.  Culturally I cannot back that de-radicalization triggers this; was it a cultural genocide against Germany and Japan after WW2?
If this is a genocide via the definition of unlawful, unsanctioned and willful death of civilians then it’s the worst ran genocide I’ve seen. More 500lbs bombs have even dropped than civilians death’s. If you want to study negligence in civilian deaths look no farther back than the Iraq invasion.
We are in a strange situation where the “military” of a people is not defending their people (allowing their shelter in underground tunnels) and in fact using as human shields for military actions. We had some of this in Afghanistan / Iraq but not to this volume since the invasion of the Japanese home islands in WW2.
Hamas will not surrender. Thus will need to be killed. This is their choice. As was it the choice of Japan to NOT surrender until a second nuclear bomb was dropped and the hint of another 6 incoming forced a power change. I’m very sorry for the Palestinian people that their leaders wish them to be martyred. We need Israel to be accountable but to the same level that the USA was and France was in Africa. If this last sentence is confusing research war crimes and collateral civilian deaths a bit more. Is an unfortunate grey area and I pray I’ll never have to be part of such again.
